Clinical Interests
Primary care links:-
  • Assessment of complex rheumatological and medical patients
  • Monitoring of Disease-Modifying Anti-rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs), e.g. methotrexate, leflunomide, hydroxychloroquine, sulphasalazine,  mycophenolate etc.
  • Assessment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis to determine whether they need to be referred for biologic therapies. It is helpful both for Primary and Secondary Care and for patients if pre-assessment can be provided in the Community, allowing Secondary Care colleagues to see patients when they have been correctly assessed
  • A full osteoporosis programme including correct use of calcium, vitamin D, bisphosphonates, strontium, denosumab, teriparatide etc. and the management of pain from osteoporotic fractures
  • Post-bereavement counselling
  • Working with primary care colleagues
Dr Darlington works closely with Primary Care colleagues and is easily available by telephone for Primary Care colleagues to discuss difficult problems and for patients to speak to her directly.

She sees patients referred by GPs on a “one visit” basis to advise on a particular diagnostic or treatment problem before returning patients to the care of their GP.

She works with GP colleagues to transfer care of stable Rheumatology patients to the community, following UK Government requirements.
Dr Darlington has a widely-ranging research programme on rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, gout, stroke, Huntington’s Disease, depression, chronic brain injury, Parkinson’s Disease, neuroprotection, lipid and purine metabolism, malaria, flavonoids in medicine and various aspects of nutritional immunology.

She founded Epsom Medical Research, a Registered Charity, and collaborates with Professor Trevor W Stone at Glasgow University to combine clinical medicine and laboratory science.

Dr Darlington has published over 60 papers or reviews in peer-reviewed journals and has written four chapters and co-edited four books.
